DANIEL GUBELMANN, SAXOPHONE (composition and arrangements)

was born on December 21, 1978 in Zurich. He studied performance and pedagogy at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) with Christoph Grab and at the Swiss Jazz-School in Bern (HKB) with Andy Scherrer. In addition, he took masterclass workshops and lessons with Chris Cheek, Kenny Garret, Perico Sambeat, Art Lande, Enrico Rava, Claudio Fasoli, Stefano Battaglia, Franco D’Andrea, Achille Succi. In 2004 he won the promotion prize of the Friedel Wald Foundation. In 2005 Daniel Gubelmann completed his music studies at the ZHdK with a grade of “very good”. In 2006 he was awarded the “Accademia Nazionale del Jazz” in Siena, Italy with a sponsorship prize and scholarship. Longer stays abroad in South Africa, Asia and South America followed. In 2014 he studied classical and modern composition with Daniel Hector Montes in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In addition to classical concerts for solo saxophone with the Winterthur Orchestra Society and as a leader and soloist with the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra and the City Light Symphony Orchestra, he has performed with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, Pepe Lienhart Big Band, Flamenco Big Band with Perico Sambeat, Bert Joris, Joris Roelofs, Michael Zisman, Paul Kuhn, Düde Dürst, Thomy Jordi, David Regan, Roman Schwaller, Adrian Mears, Isfar Sarabsky and many more. But he has also been on stage with musicians from show business such as Seven, Stefanie Heinzmann and Max Mutzke. At the Radio Pilatus Night 2016, Daniel Gubelmann played a solo spot in the concert programme with DJ Bobo and fascinated the audience in the sold-out KKL. In 2023, Gubelmann even received a solo spot with Ronan Keating live at the Symphony in the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Furthermore, he is composer and bandleader of the formations FIVE ON FIRE strings attached and combines jazz with classical music, the fusion of a jazz quartet with a string quartet. In 2022, the framework was expanded once again: On the album “Eternal Movement,” FIVE ON FIRE performs with a large string ensemble from the renowned Musikkollegium Winterthur. This cooperation is mainly thanks to the broadcaster SRF 2 Kultur, who made the recording possible.

CHRISTIAN RÖSLI, PIANO

Christian Rösli, born on 28 November 1973 in Winterthur, trained as a pianist with a minor in composition at the Winterthur Conservatory from 1994 to 1998. (HansJörg Strub, piano; Cornelius Schwehr, Johannes Schöllhorn, composition) During his studies, CR worked as a teacher at the Prova music school and pursued various projects in the field of jazz and electronic music. For example with Peter Scherer (More than Honey) at the NewJazzFestival. After graduation, CR moved to Paris, where he studied composition with Mme Solange Ancona (student of Olivier Messiaen and Giacinto Scelsi) and piano with Bennoît Delbeque (Evan Parker, Gerry Hemingway). MARC JENNY, DOUBLE BASS

Marc Jenny is a contra and electric bassist who has been intensively involved in concerts and studios in a wide variety of musical contexts ranging from contemporary music and jazz to punk rock and electronica. With his broad experience and sensitive intuition, he sets pointed impulses in his own projects and as a player in various collaborations. After completing his bachelor’s degree in classical music at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts – Music, he went on to complete his master’s degree in “Music and Art Performance” at the Institute for Contemporary Music Studies in 2014. He focused on contemporary improvisation, interdisciplinary projects and computer music.
Marc Jenny works in interdisciplinary contexts and combines music with literature, poetry slam, theatre, film, performance and dance. He also develops and programs interactive live electronics. He is a 2017 work prize winner from the canton of St. Gallen. For ten years Marc Jenny was responsible for the programming and organisation of various jazz clubs and venues. Since 2015 he has been working on a 30% workload as co-publishing director of the East Swiss cultural magazine Saiten. He lives with his family in Zurich.
Currently Marc Jenny is on the road with the jazz-open Kimm Trio, works with THE ROBOTS on concepts for “live electronic dance music”, continues to tinker with his solo performances and plays concerts with many other formations such as Knöppel, StimmSaiten, Trio SchnozJennyCaflisch etc.

MARIUS PEYER, DRUMS

Marius Peyer studied with Pierre Favre (jazz percussion) and Lars Lindvall (composition, arranging) at the Lucerne School of Music. Further studies in New York with John Riley (drumset) and Ron Miller (composition) at the Manhattan School of Music. Misha Masud (North Indian Classical Music, Tabla). Further studies in Indian classical music in Dehli and Kolkata with Shankar and Swapan Chaudhuri.
In addition to his own projects in the field of jazz, improvisation and electronica, he has worked in various ensembles and bands at home and abroad, with artists such as:

FELIX FROSCHHAMMER – VIOLIN 1

Felix Froschhammer, born in Munich, began playing the violin at the age of seven with Olga Voitova. Three years later he makes his debut as a soloist with the Munich Radio Orchestra. The prestigious scholarship of the Bavarian Music Fund allows him to study with Pierre Amoyal at the Lausanne Conservatory and later with Salvatore Accardo. In 2007 he graduates with a soloist’s diploma and distinction, and subsequently receives the special prize of the Sinfonietta de Lausanne for his outstanding achievements. Felix is primarius of the casalQuartett, concertmaster of the Ensemble Symphonique Neuchâtel and the Sinfonietta de Lausanne, and performs regularly as a soloist with a wide and varied repertoire, as well as with his quintet Tri i Dve, an ensemble specialized in Balkan music.

To open new horizons and share his passion for music with other artists and their audiences, Felix will take over the artistic direction of the Festival du Jura in 2018.

AISCHA GÜNDISCH, VIOLIN 1

The German-Jibutian violinist Aischa Gündisch was born in Tübingen in 1989. She studied at the music academies in Stuttgart, Salzburg and London, among others with Anke Dill and Detlef Hahn. In 2013 she was invited to spend a year studying with Shmuel Ashkenasi in New York and received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service. 2011-2013 she was a member of the Orchestra Academy of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra under Jonathan Nott and Herbert Blomstedt. As a chamber musician she has given concerts in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Ludwigsburg Schlossfestspiele and the Bamberg Biennale with members of the Kuss Quartet.

RACHEL SPÄT-FLECK – VIOLIN 2

Rachel was born into a family of artists and musicians in Ulm/Danube.

Music (violin and singing) and visual arts (painting) have always been central interests in her life. She gave her first public concerts as a soloist with orchestra at the age of thirteen. A year later she was accepted into a special early study program for highly gifted students at the Leopold Mozart Conservatory in Augsburg. She also studied with Prof. Helge Slaatto, with Prof. Lydia Dubrovskaya in Augsburg, with Prof. Rudolf Koelman at the Musikhochschule Winterthur/Zurich and the Carmina Quartet. Further studies took place with Walter Levin in Basel and the Alban Berg Quartet in Cologne.

In addition to her passionate commitment to chamber music and string quartet playing since her youth, she has held leading positions in various orchestras in Germany and Switzerland and has also performed as a soloist. She is a founding member of the ensemble CHAARTS.

BEATA CHECKO- CARPENTER, VIOLIN 2

Beata Checko-Zimmermann was born in Bytom/Poland. She began her musical education at the State Music School in Bytom, where she graduated in 1999. This was followed by violin studies at the Music Academy in Wroclaw with Emil Gorski and Larisa Tschumakowa. She completed a further course of study at the University of Music and Theatre in Winterthur with Rudolf Koelmann in 1996 with the Konzertreifediplom. She gained her first chamber music experience with the Carmina Quartet. From 1995-2003 she was a member of the Adorno Quartet. Since 1996 she has been a violinist with the Musikkollegium Winterthur. She also plays regularly as a new member of the Philharmonia Orchestra of the Zurich Opera House, the Tonhalle Orchestra and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra.

MARKUS FLECK – VIOLA

Born in Augsburg and raised in a musical family, he began his studies with Prof. Lydia Dubrovskaya at the Leopold Mozart Conservatory in Augsburg, then with Prof. Rudolf Koelman at the Musikhochschule Winterthur/Zurich. During his solo studies he also began string quartet studies with the Carmina Quartet. Further studies for string quartet took place with Walter Levin in Basel at the Schola Cantorum and the Alban Berg Quartet at the Musikhochschule in Cologne.

In addition to playing string quartets from an early age, he has been concertmaster in numerous orchestras. He is the founder of the Augsburg-based Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie and the CHAARTS chamber orchestra. Until 2016, he was artistic director of the Arosa Music Festival. Since 2010 he has been artistic director of the Arosa Music Academy, where he gives master classes in chamber music. As a lecturer he gave master classes at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart and the Villa Musica Mainz. Markus Fleck is a regular guest on Diskothek on SRF 2, publishes articles in the Schweizer Musikzeitung and sheet music editions for Amadeus-Verlag.

IVONA KRAPIKAITE, VIOLA

Lithuanian-born violist Ivona Krapikaite studied violin at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and at the Zurich University of the Arts. In the meantime she also attended courses at the “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Academy of Music and Theatre in Leipzig and the Bern University of the Arts. On the viola she was taught by Nicolas Corti, Patrick Jüdt and Ulrich Eichenauer. During her studies she was active as a chamber musician and took part in many international master classes. As a newcomer, she played regularly with many renowned Swiss orchestras, such as the Bern Symphony Orchestra, the Camerata Bern, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Zurich. Since 2013 she has been teaching violin and viola at the Youth Music School Winterthur and surroundings and is violist at the Musikkollegium Winterthur.

SEBASTIAN BRAUN – VIOLONCELLO

Sebastian Braun, born in Winterthur in 1990, is one of the most distinguished Swiss cellists. He is 1st prize winner of the international Domnick Cello Competition in Stuttgart and winner of various national and international competitions. Sebastian Braun also appears regularly as a soloist, for example with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the Basel Sinfonietta, the Chur Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra and the Northern Symphony Orchestra St. Petersburg. He is an experienced chamber musician with many years of stage experience (including Kaleidoscope String Quartet and Trio Eclipse). Sebastian Braun studied with Conradin Brotbek at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart and with Thomas Demenga at the Musikakademie Basel. Thanks to a generous loan, he plays an instrument by Carlo Giuseppe Testore from 1692.

SERAPHINA RUFER, CELLO

Seraphina Rufer began playing the cello at the age of four and was taught by Emeric Kostyák, Patrik Demenga and Conradin Brotbek. During this time she became 1st prize winner of several competitions, including the Swiss Youth Music and Chamber Music Competition. She is also active as a chamber musician, and as a member of the Belenus Quartet she became a prizewinner of the Orpheus Competition in 2011 and 2012. In the same year the quartet also received the special prize for the best Hayden interpretation at the 1st International Sándor Végh Quartet Competition in Budapest, a first prize at the Kiwanis Chamber Music Competition, as well as a first prize at the Interpretation Competition for Contemporary Music at the ZHdK and a third prize at the Hans Schaeuble Quartet Competition. She has performed as a soloist with, among others, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, the Zofinger Orchesterverein, the Grenchner Stadtorchester, the Kleines Zürcher Ensemble, the European Doctors’ Orchestra, the NZO and the Neues Orchester Basel. After completing her master’s degree in education with Thomas Grossenbacher with distinction, she will be a member of the Academy at the Philharmonie Zurich from 2011-2013. Since 2013 she has been a cellist at the Musikkollegium Winterthur.

PETER PREIBISCH, SCHLAGZEUG

wurde am 7. Januar 1965 in Zug geboren. Nach ersten Gehversuchen auf Büchsen und Pfannen führte ihn sein musikalischer Weg zwecks Studium in die USA. Nach insgesamt sieben Jahren in Boston bzw. New York hatte er nicht nur einen Master’s Degree in der Tasche, sondern spielte vielerorts mit Musikern wie u.a. Kurt Rosenwinkel, Matt Garrison, Jason Moran und Stefon Harris.
Zurück in der Schweiz wurde er bald zum gesuchten Sideman für sein delikates Besenspiel, seinen dynamischen Groove und seine stilistische Offenheit. Dies führte zu zahlreichen Engagements im Studio wie auf der Bühne – von Trio bis Big Band. Nebst seiner eigenen Formation “PETER’S PLAYSTATION feat. Michael Zisman” trommelt und komponiert Peter Preibisch im “Simon Wyrsch Quartett”,
“FLORIDA feat. Helen Iten” u.v.a. Peter Preibisch erhielt zweimal den Kulturfördepreis des Kantons Zug.

MARVIN TRUMMER, PIANO / FENDER RHODES

wurde am 30. März 1988 in Stuttgart geboren. 2012 schloss er sein Master of Jazz an der Hochschule der Künste Zürich mit Auszeichnung ab. Der Pianounterricht bei Chris Wiesendanger und Taylor Eigsti haben Früchte getragen. Marvin spielt unteranderem bei “Janett’s Jazz Baukasten”, “Oliveras 3” und seinem eigenem Quartett. Aber auch im Pop fühlt er sich zu Hause, wobei er sein musikalisches Talent bei der “Seat Music Session” mit Grössen wie Alain Clark oder Johannis Oerding unter Beweis stellen konnte.
Sein zweites Standbein ist der Hiphop Tanz. Er ist Mitglied der “Crew Id-8” und tanzte unteranderem schon im Theater 11 und dem Kongresshaus Zürich.

MIRCO HÄBERLI, KONTRABASS

wurde am 9. Juni 1983 in Rorschach am Bodensee geboren. Mit 12 Jahren entdeckte er mit dem E-Bass die Faszination für tiefe Töne. Nach ersten Banderfahrungen in verschiedenen Formationen, entwickelte sich das Interesse für die Improvisation, den Jazz und die Schönheit des akustischen Klanges. Im Laufe der Zeit wurde der E-Bass durch den Kontrabass ersetzt. Er studierte Kontrabass von 2007 bis 2012 bei Bänz Oester, Larry Grenadier und Bela Szedlak in Basel und lebt heute als freischaffender Bassist in Zürich. Persönlicher musikalischer Ausdruck und Klang bedeuten ihm sehr viel. Er sorgt mit seinem Kontrabass für ein tiefes, erdiges Fundament bei Five On Fire.

LAIDA ALBERDI, VIOLINE 1

wurde am 10. Oktober 1984 in Spanien geboren. Im zarten Alter von drei Jahren erhielt sie ihren ersten Unterricht als dreijährige in San Sebastian bei Ana M. Sebastian. Später studiert sie an der Pablo Sarasate Musikhochschule, wo sie bei Rafaella Acella im Jahr 2002 mit dem Lehrdiplom abschliesst. 2003-05 studierte Laida in Madrid bei Yuri Volguin und Zakhar Bron. Es folgten ab 2005 Studien an der Musikhochschule Zürich, wo sie sich bei Robert Zimansky auf das Konzertdiplom (Master of Performance) vorbereitete und dieses 2010 mit Auszeichnung abschloss. Sie besuchte Kurse und Meisterkurse bei Z.Bron, A. Zifra, D.Zafer, V.Manoogian, E.H.Asiáin, Y.Volguin,V.Pikaisen und B.Doll.
Laida Alberdi nahm am folgenden Festivals teil: “Quincena Musical” von San Sebastián,”Festival Rostropovich” in Burdeos und “Festival Moderne Musik” in Boswil, Schweiz. Konzerttätigkeit als Solistin und Kammermusikerin in verschiedenen Konzertsälen in Spanien, Deutschland, Frankreich und der Schweiz als auch Orchestermusikerin in Spanien und der Schweiz.
In den Jahren 1995-97 war sie Finalistin und Preisträgerin an den Jugendwettbewerben von San Sebastian. 2007 Gewinnerin des baskischen „Nicanor Zabaleta“-Wettbewerbs. Von 2003 bis 2005 ist sie doppelte Preisträgerin des „Lartundo“ Stipendien-Wettbewerbs in San Sebastian sowie auch zweifache Preisträgerin des Stipendien-Wettbewerbs der „Diputación Foral de San Sebastián“ (2005 und 2006).
Verschiedene Stiftungen haben sie mit Stipendien unterstützt: Vontobel Stiftung, Elsy Meyer Stiftung, Fritz Gerber Stiftung, Dr. Max Husmann-Stiftung, Giuseppe Kaiser-Stiftung, Alfred und Bertha Zangger-Weber Stiftung,der Freundeskreis Musik der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste und die ZHdK.

MIRIAM FRÜH, VIOLINE 2

wurde am 22. Mai 1985 in Regensdorf geboren. Mirjam erhielt ab ihrem 8. Lebenshjahr Violinunterricht an der Musikschule Knonaueramt bei Mario Hutter, Esther Snozzi und Sibylle Tschopp. Nach der Matura am musischen Gymnasium Unterstrass in Zürich begann sie ihr Violinstudium an der Musikhochschule Luzern bei Prof. Gunars Larsens. 2008 wechselte sie an die Zürcher Hochschule der Künste in die Klasse von Prof. Robert Zimansky. 2010 erlangt sie den Bachelor of Arts an der ZHdK mit dem Projekt “Passacaglia Klangwelt”.
Bereits jetzt übt Mirjam Früh eine rege Konzerttätigkeit in diversen Orchestern wie der Camerata Cantabile, Cappella dei Giovani, Strings of Bird aus.
Ihre zweite Leidenschaft ist das Singen, was ihr auch schon die Möglichkeit bot, in professionellen Vokalensembles mitzuwirken.
Bisher besuchte Mirjam Früh Meisterkurse bei Sibylle Tschopp, Aida Stucki, Detlef Hahn und Barbara Doll.
Durch diverse Stellvertretungen an Musikschulen entdeckte sie auch ihre Freude am Unterrichten und an der Zusammenarbeit mit Kindern.
Seit März 2011 ist Mirjam Früh an der Musikschule Dübendorf als Geigenlehrerin und Ensembleleiterin angestellt.

XIAO BÜRGI-MA, VIOLA

beginnt im Alter von 5 Jahren mit dem Violinunterricht. Vor Aufnahme des Bachelorstudiums bei Prof. Changhai Wang am Central Conservatory of Music in Peking wechselt sie zur Bratsche. Danach setzt sie ihre Studien an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste bei Prof. Nicolas Corti fort und erlangt zwei Jahre später das Konzertdiplom mit Auszeichnung. Nun folgt ein Studium bei Prof. Isabel Charisius an der Musikhochschule Luzern, das sie nach 7 Semestern mit dem Solistendiplom (ebenfalls mit Auszeichnung) abschliesst. Darauf absolviert sie einen einjährigen CAS an der Musikhochschule Lausanne bei Prof. Alexander Zemtsov.
Xiao Bürgi-Ma ist Zuzügerin im Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, im Musikkollegium Winterthur, im Barockorchester St. Gallen und im Luzerner Symphonieorchester. Zudem hat sie als Stimmführerin im Festivalorchester Verbier gespielt und einen Zeitvertrag (75%-Stelle) im St. Galler Symphonieorchester erhalten. Seit 2014 spielt sie als Viola Tutti in der Argovia Philharmonic.
Am nationalen, chinesischen Violinwettbewerb „Hualing“ nimmt Xiao Bürgi-Ma erfolgreich teil und gewinnt zudem den Publikumspreis. Ausserdem ist sie Preisträgerin des „Kiefer Hablitzel“-Musikwettbewerbs. Am renommierten internationalen Musikwettbewerb in Padova gewinnt sie den 1. Preis.

CLARA RADA GOMEZ, CELLO

wurde am 2. Juli 1988 in Madrid (Spanien) geboren. Im Alter von fünf begann sie Musikunterrichten zu bekommen. Mit elf erhielt sie ihren ersten Cellounterricht . Clara studiert Musik zuerst in Marid und Zaragoza. Später wurde sie an den Musikhochschulen in Zürich und Basel weiterstudieren. In ihrer Ausbildung und professionellen Tätigkeit spielt sie sowohl in vielseitigen Kammermusikgruppe als auch Solo und Orchester Konzerte in verschiedenen Musikstilen: von Alter bis Neuer Musik, Improvisation, Theater und Jazz mit “Five on Fire strings attached”. Seit 2012 beschäftigt sich ebenso mit der Musikpädadogie. Roel Dieltiens, Cuarteto Casals und Quiroga, Xavier Gagnepain, Christophe Coin und Alfred Zimmerlin habe sie musikalisch stark beeinflusst. Sie hat an zahlreichen musikalischen Festivals als Solistin teilgenommen und spielte in verschiedenen Ensembles in Europa.
